Liposuction FAQ

(Lipoplasty/Suction Lipectomy):

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most sought after cosmetic surgery procedure because it sculpts your body in ways that diet and exercise may have failed. Liposuction removes fat from the buttocks, thighs, knees, chin, cheeks, neck, stomach, waist, hips, upper arms.

Who is an Idea Candidate for Liposuction?

An ideal candidate for liposuction is healthy person with firm and elastic skin pockets of undesirable fat that has not responded to diet and exercise. This person understands that this is not a weight loss option, but a body sculpting solution. About half of all liposuction candidates are middle aged.

Will I need to stay in a hospital?

No. For your convenience this procedure is performed under local anesthesia in Dr. Wolf’s office-based treatment center. The procedure can be performed in as little as one to three hours, depending on the size of the area being treated.

How is liposuction performed?

Dr. Wolf performs Tumescent liposuction under a local anesthesia. Once the areas have been isolated and marked, Dr. Wolf injects the numbing solution through the skin into the subcutaneous fat. The fat is removed through cannulas (specialized hollowed tubes). After the fat has been removed, the patient is put in a standing position in order to immediately evaluate if enough fat has been removed for the desired effect. Post-operative medications are usually not necessary.

Are there any risks?

Risks are minimized when this procedure is performed by a qualified surgeon, such as Dr. Wolf. Although risks are rare, they do exist and you should be aware of them. The following are risks associated with liposuction:

What can I expect after the surgery?

Post-surgery, patients may need compression garments and antibiotics to aid in the healing process. Patients are encouraged to walk around as soon as they physically can and many can comfortably return to work in a few days as long as strenuous activity is avoided.

When will I see results?

Results can be seen immediately, however, full results can be seen once the swelling in the treated area goes down. The amount of swelling along with the healing time depends on individual factors such as the amount of fat removed and you individual healing capacity. Full results are usually seen around 6 months post-surgery and scars are small and well hidden.

There is a possibility that the area can heal with irregularities, such as numbness, changes in pigmentation and/or baggy skin.

How long will the results last?

Weight gain in the treated areas is unlikely since some of the fat cells have been removed. However, if you gain weight fat deposits may appear in other areas of the body. Although many patients are very satisfied with their results, proper diet and exercise will help to maintain these results for the long term.
